As of March 2016, the SAT has been redesigned in format. Here’s a look at the New SAT:

The test has two mandatory subject areas:

-Math
-Evidence-Based Reading & Writing
+ There is still an essay section, but this is now optional.

 

Scoring
– Math: Ranging from 200-800
– Evidence-Based Reading & Writing: Ranging from 200 – 800 (combined)
– Essay: Ranging from 2-8 on each of three dimensions for the essay (reading, writing, and analysis)
– Max. score is 1600 for the test, 24 for the essay portion (which is optional and scored separately)

ACT

An alternative to the SAT is the ACT test. Here’s a look at the ACT:

The test has four major sections/subject areas:

– Science
– Reading
– Math

Scoring

-English: ACT score between 1 and 36
-Math: ACT score between 1 and 36
-Reading: ACT score between 1 and 36
-Science: ACT score between 1 and 36
Composite score is an average of these four scores.
+Optional essay section-scored on range of 2-13; four dimensions (Ideas & Analysis, Development & Support, Organization, and Language Use & Conventions)
